Ein langsamer, bewusster Arbeitsprozess

Bis Julius Schien ein Foto eines Tatorts macht, vergeht in der Regel ein ganzer Tag – manchmal auch zwei, wenn das Licht nicht passt. Für jede Aufnahme reist er an den jeweiligen Ort, beobachtet Lichtverhältnisse, Atmosphäre und Tageszeit, bis der passende Moment die gewünschte Stimmung trägt. In einigen Fällen übernachtet er im Auto, um früh am Morgen fotografieren zu können.

Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen

Seine fotografische Handschrift und technische Präzision entwickelte Julius Schien während seines Studiums „Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography“ an der Hochschule Hannover. Sein Projekt „Rechtes Land“ wird durch die Amadeu Antonio Stiftung sowie die Stiftung Kulturwerk unterstützt. 2024 hielt er eine Keynote auf der World Press Photo Ausstellung in Oldenburg. Seine erste Einzelausstellung findet aktuell in Biel in der Schweiz statt. Mit der Ausstellung im M26 folgt nun seine erste Soloschau in Deutschland.

A slow, deliberate working process

It usually takes Julius Schien a whole day to take a photo of a crime scene – sometimes even two if the light isn’t right. For each shot, he travels to the respective location, observing the lighting conditions, atmosphere and time of day until the right moment creates the desired mood. In some cases, he spends the night in his car so that he can take pictures early in the morning.

A look behind the scenes

Julius Schien developed his photographic style and technical precision while studying “Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography” at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. His project “Rechtes Land” is supported by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation and the Kulturwerk Foundation. In 2024, he gave a keynote speech at the World Press Photo exhibition in Oldenburg. His first solo exhibition is currently taking place in Biel, Switzerland. The exhibition at M26 marks his first solo show in Germany.
